Abstract
Purpose - This study aims to explore how civic education can be integrated into halal tourism to foster social awareness among tourists. By understanding the role of civic education, the research seeks to identify ways to promote ethical and socially responsible behavior in tourism contexts, particularly in halal destinations.
Method - Using a qualitative literature review method, this research analyzes relevant academic works from scholarly databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, focusing on publications from 2013 to 2024. The review examines studies related to halal tourism, civic education, social responsibility, and transformative learning in tourism settings.
Findings - The review highlights that social awareness—characterized by empathy, cultural respect, and ethical conduct—is crucial for sustainable tourism, especially in culturally sensitive destinations like halal tourism areas. Civic education offers a framework to instill these values through informal learning experiences, such as guided tours, community-based tourism, and culturally embedded narratives. However, the study also finds that while the integration of civic values in tourism is promising, practical implementation in halal tourism remains limited and underexplored.
Originality/Value - This paper contributes a conceptual framework for applying civic education in halal tourism contexts and offers insights for policymakers, educators, and destination managers. It proposes a pathway for fostering socially responsible tourists and advancing ethical, inclusive, and sustainable tourism practices in halal destinations.
