Abstract
Purpose - This study aims to examine halal tourism from an Indonesian perspective, highlighting the country’s potential, challenges, and unique approach in developing Muslim-friendly tourism.
Method/Approach/Design - The research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach through literature review and analysis of government policies, tourism strategies, and relevant case studies from Indonesian destinations.
Finding - Indonesia, as the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, has significant potential to lead in halal tourism. Several regions, such as Lombok, Aceh, and West Sumatra, have implemented halal tourism strategies, including halal-certified accommodations, culinary services, and religious facilities. However, challenges remain in standardization, promotion, and balancing between religious values and broader tourism appeal.
Originality/Value - This paper offers a contextual understanding of how halal tourism is being interpreted and applied in Indonesia. It contributes by highlighting localized practices and the dynamic between national identity, religious values, and tourism development. The study is valuable for policymakers and practitioners aiming to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global halal tourism market.
